FAQ's

An Enrolled Agent is a tax advisor authorized by the U.S. federal government to represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for tax matters including audits, collections, and appeals.

The EA designation is granted by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), making it the highest credential awarded by the U.S. Treasury Department for tax professionals.

No, non-U.S. citizens can also pursue the EA credential. However, you must obtain a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) from the IRS to register for the exam.

There are no strict academic requirements. Anyone can become an EA by passing all three parts of the Special Enrollment Examination (SEE) and undergoing a background check.

The EA exam consists of 3 parts:

  • Part 1: Individuals
  • Part 2: Businesses
  • Part 3: Representation, Practices, and Procedures

Most candidates complete the EA program within 6–12 months depending on their preparation time and exam scheduling.

Enrolled Agents can work in tax consulting firms, accounting firms, corporates, or establish their own tax practice. They have unlimited practice rights before the IRS.

The CPA and CMA are broader accounting and management credentials, while EA is specialized in U.S. taxation. EA is highly valued for those focusing exclusively on tax representation and advisory.

EAs must complete 72 hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) every three years, with at least 16 hours per year, including 2 hours on ethics.

The EA credential offers unlimited representation rights before the IRS, high demand in tax practice, international recognition in taxation, flexible career options, and lower cost and duration compared to CPA.
